And it is said that....

....."During the 1920’s prohibition in the US, Rocky Point had its first real boom when John Stone, a hotel owner from Ajo, Arizona saw an opportunity to make money. He drilled a water well east of town and built a hotel/casino. He also set up flight service from Phoenix and Tucson. Tourists could come to Mexico and enjoy drinking, gambling and fishing without fear. It is said Al Capone and many of his friends were frequent visitors. Rocky Point was growing and doing well until Stone and the locals had a falling out. He burned down the hotel and blew up the water well on his way out of town. The town died again."......

......"Prohibition then hits, making alcoholic beverages illegal in the U.S. & the hotels first order of business was to sell beer, whiskey, and wine to the 'tourists'. Soon another U.S. citizen & Ajo,Arizona hotel & bar owner Thomas Childs - and a partner named Al Capone - were in the hotel business in Peñasco. He and several Mexican fisherman formed the nucleus of a town."......

......"In 1929, a US Mafioso named John Stone (an associate of Al Capone) saw the potential of the area as a resort destination and built a hotel and drilled a well for fresh water. Guests were flown in for fishing, hunting, gambling and (remember, it was during Prohibition) drinking. The availability of fresh water attracted more Mexican fishermen to the area, and the town began to grow. By 1931, Stone had managed to alienate many of the local Mexican government officials, and lost his license to do business in the area. Before departing, Stone burned his hotel and dynamited the well, leaving Rocky Point once again without fresh water. The Hotel was rebuilt by the Bustamante brothers and re-opened as the Hotel Penasco. The building itself still remains."......

Translation:
........"One of the youngest population centers of Sonora State. Rocky Point started its formation towards 1927 like a simple fishing village; since then, fishermen from different areasof the state, like Guaymas, Kino Bay, Puerto Libertad and Puerto Lobos, among others, started coming during the fishing season, beginning to settle using tents or caves found in the rocky hill above the sandy dunes.".......

and there are other versions as well, some say that for Mexico, legally started as a village back in the late 1920's; for some historians started way before when the Indians started a route between Ajo, Arizona and the Sea of Cortez, where many artifacts have been found in the mountains and hills leading to Rocky Point area.

The most recent history and the one we all know is that Rocky Point is the place to go to relax and enjoy the beaches and the many activities that Puerto Penasco has to offer, snorkeling, diving, horse back riding, golfing, off-roading, dinning in the many restaurants in town some of them with mexican food that makes you re-think your idea about mexican food.

As a new town with all the new building developments taking place all over, Puerto Penasco has been changing also, what used to be a sleepy fishing village has grown to a very lively touristic destination for the southwestern states of the US.

English is spoken almost every where and the currency although it is still the mexican peso, dollars are accepted everywhere too, and depending where you go, you might get the change back in pesos.

Rocky Point has a few different areas,

Fish Market - with the Malecon Kino overlooking the Sea of Cortes, many curio shops, restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors, remember thrifty ice creams?

Playa Mirador - one of the oldest beach areas of Rocky Point, location of the famous "Spring Break" party street Avenida Matamoros, in a matter of 2 blocks you will find yourself in what seems to be a huge open bar, where college students from many universities concentrate during the 2 week vacation period.
Then you go one block west and find yourself in a nice sandy beach, many restaurant and hotels in this area makes it so you do not have to go anywhere for anything.

Calle 13 - Another well known area for its numerous restaurants, bars and hotels, here you will find the rentals for the atv's and rhinos almost in every block.

Sandy Beach -  this is the location where most of the new developments are taking place, resorts, spas, 18-hole golf courses, condos and houses, restaurants as well as bars and of course a couple of miles of sandy beach and the future home port site for the cruise ships.

Choya Bay - located about 5 miles out of town and home of the world famous JJ's Cantina, it is just northwest of Sandy Beach.

Las Conchas - the oldest american enclave in Rocky point exclusively residential with many available beachfront rental homes.

Mayan Palace - One of the most, if not the most luxurious Mexican resort/timeshare, with its Jack Nicolaus 18-hole golf course, spa and many amenities to keep anybody, kids or adult busy.

And there are others like Playa Diamante, Playa Encanto, Playa San Jorge, etc. all located outside of town along the shores of the Sea of Cortez and are residential only.
